Composting in Canada is SO Frustrating!

The most frustrating thing about trying to do any composting in Ontario, Canada is the lack of affordable composting devices. For instance, you can get a 7-cubic foot Good Ideas composting unit landed here, but it'll cost more than $170.00! And the best unit available from Lee Valley in Burlington, Ontario is around $179.00. This makes composting an incredibly expensive adventure --- or a depressingly messy task if one has to begin by constructing a unit from scratch.

Just wanted to express my frustrations to a fellow Canadian.

Below are the units I am referring to:

I Feel Your Pain

Hey Daniel,

I have four words for you...

Composting in Canada can be a little challenging at times. Regarding your frustrations with the shipping costs of sending products from the US to Canada, yeah, those are a real pain in the ass too.

Here's what I can do for you. Come summer time, I will be purchasing and reviewing several compost tumblers. After I am done with the first one, you can stop by and take it off my hands. Sound good?

Or stay tuned for a couple upcoming videos on how to built your own composting unit on a shoe-string budget. Alas, I must wait until the snow clears before diving into these projects.

PS - I have to assume you're already composting with worms, yes? I ask because I find my worms to be a composting life-saver in the winter months in Canada. They help me retain my sanity when I can't get outdoors to garden.

Canadian Rotary Compost Candidate

Looking through the Veseys Seeds 2012 Edition catalogue and spotted a unit called the Roto Twin Composter for $112.00. It's a small unit, but large enough for my needs. What makes it attractive is the two-chamber design. This give small-scale, square-foot gardeners like me a chance to get early delivery on usable compost while having another batch in the oven (so to speak).

This might be a good candidate for a test run!

A Compost Tumbler for Canadians, EH?

That's exciting!

I tried to find the tumbler on their site but didn't have any luck. Who makes it?

The dual chamber design definitely makes for more efficient composting, assuming the chambers are large enough to handle a decent amount of materials.

Please follow-up with your results and experiences. By the way, I love the title of your post.
