Is Worm Composting In a Bathtub a Good Idea?

by Patricia Decker

Is it advisable to use an old bathtub as a worm composting bin? If so, what is the best way to aerate the tub? We have one to use, but are concerned about lack of aeration and excess moisture problems.

Definitely Worth A Try
by: Compost Junkie Dave

Advisable?

Who cares.

Possible?

Absolutely!

Here are a few considerations:

You need to ensure excess moisture can drain out of the contents and tub. You may try positioning the tub so it slopes towards the drain (raise one the none-drain end higher than the drain end). Also install some sort of raised platform between the worm bedding/composting material and the base of the bathtub. Your composting worms will not thrive if they are forced to live in an excessively moist environment. If you provide such a platform inside the tub itself, you shouldn't need much more in terms of aeration because small amounts of air will be allowed to circulate around the entire contents of your tub.

If you can't imagine what I am describing, please let me know and I'll try to explain it differently.

Also, if your bathtub is going to be kept outdoors, you may want to consider insulating it to help reduce temperature fluctuations for your worms.

Please let us know how it goes and if you have any photos, please post them.

RUB-A- DUB TUB
by: GENE

The tub idea works for me [& worms].If the water does stand;the worms can move above water. With a bucket under the "drain" you can tell how much has flowed thru the material.Just keep the contence of the tub damp & well feed.
I like the idea of somthing on bottom of tub for air flow. How about upside down carpet over wood strips? The smell of the water out the drain will keep you informed.
